Court Orders Inquiry into Interior Minister’s Qualifications

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a request to investigate the academic qualifications of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The ruling, delivered on Friday, follows an application by an activist seeking to verify the Minister’s educational history.
The inquiry specifically targets the secondary school certificate allegedly issued to the Minister by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
The applicant cited noticeable discrepancies in the records as the primary reason for seeking judicial intervention.
While the court approved the probe into the WAEC results, a separate request regarding the Minister’s NYSC discharge certificate was declined. The judge ruled that the applicant failed to sufficiently prove he was acting in the public interest for that specific demand.
Previously, the legal team had sought an order of mandamus to compel the NYSC to release detailed service records.
These documents were intended to clarify allegations regarding the Minister’s participation during his 2006 service year.
Despite the partial setback regarding the NYSC records, the activists remain committed to the legal challenge. They maintain that the investigation is necessary to uphold the standards required for top government officials.
The court’s decision marks a significant step in the ongoing legal battle over the Minister’s credentials. The focus now shifts to the verification process of the secondary school results to determine their authenticity.
