The Kwara State Fire Service successfully recovered the body of a 45-year-old man, identified as Mr. Idris, from a river in the Alapa area of Asa Local Government.
The recovery operation followed a distress call received on Thursday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victim had gone to the river for an unknown purpose before he reportedly slipped and drowned. Locals raised the alarm after realizing he had failed to resurface from the water.
The fire service arrived at the scene and launched a search operation alongside local divers. After several hours of searching, the team managed to locate and pull the remains of the victim from the river.
Following the recovery, the deceased was handed over to his family and the community leaders in Alapa for burial. The atmosphere in the community remained somber as residents mourned the tragic loss.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, confirmed the incident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. He urged residents to exercise extreme caution when near deep water bodies.
A spokesperson for the service emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “We urge members of the public to be more careful, especially during these periods, and avoid areas that pose a threat to their safety to prevent such avoidable tragedies.”
