Lobbying Intensifies for Replacement of Demised Bayelsa Deputy Governor

Bayelsa’s political scene is heating up as Governor Douye Diri faces pressure to replace the late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Since Ewhrudjakpo’s sudden passing in December 2025, a critical vacancy has remained in the state’s executive leadership.
Stakeholders are divided over whether the successor must hail from the late deputy’s home base in Sagbama.
Proponents of this view argue that maintaining the current zoning arrangement is essential for political fairness and regional stability.
Conversely, some advocates are pushing for a wider search across the Bayelsa West Senatorial District. High-profile names, including the Governor’s Chief of Staff and the House Speaker, have emerged as leading contenders for the position.
The Civil Liberties Organisation has criticized the appointment delay, noting that the vacancy hinders state administration during the governor’s absence. They have urged Governor Diri to prioritize competence and character over purely political interests.
Former Governor Seriake Dickson recently addressed the situation, condemning the aggressive lobbying that began before the late deputy’s burial.
He reaffirmed that the legal power to choose a successor lies entirely with the current governor.
Regarding his stance on the selection process, Seriake Dickson stated, “There is no contention about who should nominate a replacement for the late deputy governor. Even though I produced the governor and his deputy, I have neither interfered with the government nor sought any favours.”
