Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for Partial Closure over Maintenance

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for essential repairs.

Starting Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the rehabilitation project is expected to last four weeks, wrapping up in mid-March.

The maintenance, led by the Federal Ministry of Works, will target the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate. This critical project aims to improve the highway’s safety and structural integrity for the thousands of daily commuters.

To minimize gridlock, work will occur in two phases, first focusing on Abeokuta-bound traffic followed by Lagos-bound lanes. Motorists will be diverted to alternate sides of the carriageway while each specific section is being paved.

The Ministry of Transportation has deployed traffic officials and signage to manage the resulting congestion. Commuters are advised to factor in extra travel time and follow the guidance of personnel stationed along the construction zones.

Highlighting the timeline, Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi stated, “The rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and end on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning a period of four weeks.”

The government has appealed for patience, noting that while the closure causes temporary delays, the repairs are vital for long-term safety. Cooperation from road users is essential to ensure the project stays on schedule.
