Lagos Announces Four-Week Partial Closure of Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for Repairs
By Momodu Favour
The Lagos State Government has announced a four-week partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to enable the Federal Ministry of Works to rehabilitate failed sections of the busy highway.
The closure, which takes effect from Wednesday, February 11, 2026, will run until Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
The disclosure was made by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement posted on Tuesday on the official X handle of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.
According to Osiyemi, the rehabilitation work will cover the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes of the expressway. He said the project would be executed in phases to minimise traffic disruption and ensure continuous vehicular movement along the corridor.
“The rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, and end on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, spanning a period of four weeks,” the statement read.
Osiyemi explained that Phase One of the project would run from Wednesday, February 11, to Wednesday, March 4, 2026, and would affect Abeokuta-bound traffic. During this phase, rehabilitation will be carried out on the section from U-Turn Bus Stop inward to Sango Tollgate.
He noted that traffic from Lagos/Abule-Egba heading toward Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate would be diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the active work zone, before being restored to full access after the construction area.
The rehabilitation, he added, would be carried out one lane at a time, with traffic redirected to completed sections as work progresses.
Motorists on the Lagos-bound carriageway, Osiyemi said, would enjoy free flow of traffic throughout Phase One.
According to the statement, Phase Two of the rehabilitation, which will affect Lagos-bound traffic, is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, March 4, to Wednesday, March 11, 2026. This phase will cover the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction.
During Phase Two, traffic from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate heading toward Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted through one half of the road, about 20 metres away from the work zone, with normal traffic flow restored after the construction area.
Osiyemi added that work would also be executed in halves during this phase, while motorists on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway would maintain uninterrupted movement.
The commissioner assured road users that adequate traffic management and safety measures would be deployed throughout the duration of the project. He urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, obey traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic officials on duty.
He also appealed for patience and understanding from commuters, noting that the temporary inconvenience was necessary to ensure long-term safety and improved road conditions for all users.
The announcement comes amid ongoing infrastructure rehabilitation works on major federal highways across Lagos and neighbouring states, as authorities intensify efforts to improve road safety and traffic flow in the region.
