A hidden petrol container inside a commercial bus has sparked a deadly inferno following a collision in Lagos.
LASEMA officials confirmed that illegal fuel storage turned a manageable accident into a catastrophic fire.
The crash occurred when the driver lost control, hitting another vehicle. Witnesses noted that the hidden fuel beneath the seats caused the bus to erupt into flames almost instantly.
Explaining the cause, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu stated: “Investigation revealed that a container of petrol was being carried in the bus, which ignited upon impact, resulting in a fire that could not be contained.”
Responders found the vehicle completely engulfed, making rescue attempts nearly impossible.
Multiple passengers were trapped as the accelerant caused the fire to intensify within seconds.
The Lagos State Government condemned the act, calling hidden fuel a “ticking time bomb.” Officials warned that such safety violations continue to endanger the lives of innocent commuters.
This tragedy has sparked demands for stricter vehicle inspections at motor parks.
Authorities are now urging passengers to report drivers carrying inflammable substances to prevent further avoidable deaths.
