Yobe Student Dies After Alleged Bullying at Potiskum School

A 17-year-old Senior Secondary School 3 student of Government Science and Technical College, Potiskum, Yobe State, identified as Hassan Ahmadu, has reportedly lost his life after an alleged bullying incident involving fellow students.

The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday within the school premises in Potiskum Local Government Area.

A family source disclosed that Hassan was laid to rest later the same day in his hometown of Gadaka, located in Fika Local Government Area of the state.

Preliminary information indicates that the student was assaulted by some of his classmates, although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been fully established.

Confirming the development, the Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the command was aware of the case and had launched an investigation to determine the cause of death.

“We are aware of the incident, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain what led to the student’s death,” Abdulkarim stated.

A teacher at the school, who requested anonymity, alleged that Hassan had been subjected to repeated bullying prior to the incident.

According to the teacher, the student reportedly appealed to his attackers to stop on Sunday, but they allegedly ignored him and assaulted him severely.

“He was beaten badly, and later died. The incident left both students and staff in shock,” the teacher said.

The teacher further revealed that the school management had handed over the students suspected to be involved to the police for further investigation, expressing hope that the authorities would establish the facts and ensure accountability.

Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Yobe State, Prof. Abba Idriss Adam, were unsuccessful, as he said he would respond at a later time when contacted.
