US Intervention in Nigeria a ‘Blessing, Says Remi Tinubu

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has described recent United States intervention in Nigeria’s security challenges as a “blessing,” saying it represents a timely boost to the country’s efforts to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.

Mrs Tinubu made the remarks during engagements in the United States, where she spoke on Nigeria’s security situation and the need for stronger international cooperation to address persistent insurgency, banditry and attacks on civilians, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria. According to her, the involvement of the United States, including intelligence support and targeted military actions against terrorist groups, has helped reinforce Nigeria’s capacity to confront armed groups linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). She noted that such collaboration demonstrates global concern about Nigeria’s security and the protection of innocent lives. The First Lady specifically referenced recent U.S. military actions carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities, describing them as helpful in degrading terrorist capabilities. She added that Nigeria remains open to deeper cooperation with international partners, provided such efforts respect the country’s sovereignty and align with its national security objectives. Her comments come amid renewed global attention on Nigeria’s security crisis, following deadly attacks in several states and mounting pressure on the government to restore peace in affected communities. The United States has in recent months increased its security engagement with Nigeria, including the deployment of a small military team for advisory and intelligence support roles. Mrs Tinubu’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions at home. While some political figures and analysts have welcomed the U.S. support as necessary given the scale of Nigeria’s security challenges, others have urged caution, warning against over-reliance on foreign military intervention. Reacting to the development, some lawmakers praised the First Lady’s diplomatic outreach, saying it has helped improve Nigeria’s international image and draw global support to its security concerns. They argued that international partnerships remain crucial as Nigeria battles increasingly sophisticated armed groups. The Federal Government has maintained that any foreign assistance in the fight against terrorism is conducted with Nigeria’s consent and under clear frameworks to safeguard national sovereignty. Officials have reiterated that the country remains committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity, while addressing the root causes of insecurity.
