NSC Congratulates Nigerian Tennis Family on Davis Cup World Group II Promotion

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has congratulated the Nigerian tennis family following the country’s qualification for the Davis Cup World Group II, after an impressive victory over Uzbekistan in the World Group II Promotion Playoffs.

Nigeria secured promotion in front of home fans at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, 1895, capping a memorable campaign with a dominant performance against their Asian opponents.

The hero of the tie was Daniel Adeleye, who delivered the decisive point on Sunday with a calm and commanding 6–3, 6–4 victory over Ilya Ignatov in the reverse singles match.

His win handed Nigeria an unassailable 3–1 lead, sealing promotion with a match to spare.

Reacting to the achievement, Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, praised the players, officials and organisers for their collective effort in delivering a successful tournament.

“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these players and the Nigeria Tennis Federation. We commend everyone who worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic tournament that ultimately ended in success for Nigeria with the promotion we earned,” Olopade said.

He noted that the achievement reflects the renewed enthusiasm for sports development in the country, driven by strong support from the Federal Government.

“This success comes at a time of renewed commitment to sports under the leadership of Mr President. It reinforces our belief that Nigerian sports is firmly on the right track,” he added.

Olopade further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes as they prepare for major international competitions, expressing confidence that the country’s tennis players will continue to make the nation proud on the global stage.

Nigeria’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II marks a significant milestone for the sport in the country and underscores the growing strength and competitiveness of Nigerian tennis on the international scene.
