Mining Company Raises Defence in Zuru Community Consent Dispute

A mining company operating in Zuru Local Government Area, Kebbi State, has responded to the Federal Government’s claim that it lost the consent of the host community, insisting it met all legal and regulatory requirements before commencing operations.

The company said it had fulfilled all conditions necessary to secure the community’s consent, arguing that recent reports of a withdrawal were based on misrepresentations by some local authorities. “We complied with every requirement and obtained genuine consent from the Zuru community before starting our operations,” a spokesperson stated. The Federal Government had previously signaled concerns over the company’s compliance with community consent rules, which are mandatory under Nigeria’s mining regulations. The FG’s notice raised fears of possible sanctions or licence revocation, prompting the company to publicly clarify its position. Industry observers note that this dispute highlights the growing tension between mining firms, local communities, and government authorities in Nigeria. The Federal Government has been tightening enforcement of community development agreements and consent requirements for mining companies, warning that non‑compliance could result in withdrawal of licences. Kebbi State has previously seen conflicts between host communities and mining firms over environmental concerns, compensation, and social responsibility obligations. Analysts say the resolution of such disputes is critical for maintaining investor confidence and ensuring sustainable mining practices in the region.
