Makinde Free to Join ADC, Party Open to All, Says Oyo State Chairman
The Oyo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that Governor Seyi Makinde is welcome to join the party if he chooses, but must respect its internal democratic processes.
Mr Yinka Olona, Chairman of the ADC in Oyo State, made the remark on Monday while speaking with journalists at a stakeholders’ meeting in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area.
He was responding to increasing speculation about possible political realignments involving the Oyo governor.
Olona emphasised that the doors of the party remain open to all political actors, including Makinde, so long as they are willing to adhere to the party’s rules and uphold its democratic ethos.
“If he is interested in coming, he is free to do so, as long as he abides by our rules,” Olona said. He added that the ADC would not allow any individual to hijack its structure.
The statement comes amid ongoing rumours of defections and political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although the ADC leadership has reiterated its openness to new members, party organs have also cautioned against imposition and undemocratic practices within the party ranks.
Meanwhile, Governor Makinde himself has publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In recent comments following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, Makinde stated he is “comfortable in the PDP” and has no immediate plans to defect to either the ADC or the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political analysts say the speculation reflects broader realignments in Nigerian party politics, where defections and shifting alliances have become common as parties prepare for future elections.
Whether Makinde will take up the ADC’s invitation or remain with the PDP is likely to unfold in the coming months.
