Lagos Government Seals Ladipo Market Over Environmental Alleged Violations

The Lagos State Government has shut down Ladipo Market in Mushin due to severe environmental violations, including reckless waste disposal and unpaid bills.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab ordered the closure, stating the market will remain sealed until traders meet mandatory sanitary conditions.

This enforcement is part of a state-wide campaign to ensure markets comply with environmental regulations.

As a major hub for automotive spare parts, Ladipo has long faced scrutiny for activities that contravene state laws, necessitating this intervention to restore order.

Commissioner Wahab emphasized the importance of legal compliance for public health, stating, “It is imperative that markets in the state adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations put in place for the well-being of residents. The closure of Ladipo Market serves as a stern reminder that no entity, regardless of its size or influence, is above the law.”

LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin noted that the closure allows for a thorough assessment of the market’s environmental impact. Remedial measures will be implemented during this period to ensure the area is fully restored before any business activities are permitted to resume.

Gbadegesin warned that the state will continue to take decisive action against any entities flouting environmental laws. He stressed that as Lagos evolves into a megacity, all economic activities must be conducted responsibly to protect the health and safety of every citizen.

The closure follows similar actions against Oyingbo and Oke-Odo markets. The government has reiterated its commitment to this “offensive” against environmental infractions, vowing to continue the campaign until total sanity and cleanliness are restored across all Lagos markets.
