On February 8, 2026, Japanese voters headed to the polls for a high-stakes snap election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The election serves as a critical test for Takaichi, who became the country’s first female prime minister only months ago in October 2025. She is looking to convert her high approval ratings into a stable majority for the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The snap election involves all 465 seats in the House of Representatives, with over 1,270 candidates competing for power. Takaichi’s administration currently operates through a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party. According to reports , “Takaichi is banking on her popularity to help boost the fortunes of the Liberal Democratic Party, which currently governs through a fragile coalition.”

Economic concerns are at the forefront of the national debate, as citizens struggle with a rising cost of living and stagnant wages. While the LDP seeks to stimulate growth through conservative economic policies, various opposition parties have campaigned on platforms of increased welfare or total deregulation. For many voters, the primary hope is to find relief from persistent inflation that has outpaced recent pay increases.

National security and regional defense also play a major role in the election cycle. Takaichi has advocated for a more assertive approach toward China and an expansion of Japan’s defense capabilities.

This shift comes as Tokyo navigates an increasingly uncertain regional environment, making the strength of the new governing mandate a matter of significant interest for international partners.

Logistical challenges were reported in certain regions of the country as heavy snow blanketed parts of Japan on election day. Despite the harsh weather, which has already been linked to several fatalities across the nation, millions of voters turned out to cast their ballots.

Early voting figures were notably high, with over 20 million people having already voted before the official Sunday polls opened.

The results of the election will determine if the LDP can reach the 233-seat threshold required to elect a prime minister or the 261-seat “absolute stable majority.” Such a majority would allow the ruling party to control parliamentary committees and streamline the passage of key legislation.

Results are expected to be announced shortly after the polls close at 11:00 GMT.
