Italy Rejects Membership in Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ Over Constitutional Limits

Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani announced on Saturday that Italy will not join U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace.” The decision marks Italy as the latest major European ally to distance itself from the initiative, which was launched last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Tajani explained that the refusal is based on legal conflicts with Italy’s constitution, which prohibits joining organizations led by a single foreign leader. This follows weeks of speculation during which Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had expressed interest but raised similar concerns about the board’s governing structure.

While the board was initially created to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, its charter has expanded its scope to other global conflicts.

However, its structure which grants Trump significant executive power and veto rights has led several nations to worry it might rival or undermine the authority of the United Nations.

The Foreign Minister clarified the finality of the decision during an interview with the ANSA news agency. He emphasized that the legal barriers are absolute and cannot be bypassed under current Italian law, regardless of Italy’s desire to support peace efforts in the Middle East.

Discussing the legal impasse, Tajani stated, “We cannot participate in the Board of Peace because there is a constitutional limit. This is insurmountable from a legal standpoint.”

By declining membership, Italy joins other key G7 members, including France, Britain, and Germany, who have all expressed skepticism or formal opposition. Despite the high-profile refusal, Tajani maintained that Italy remains committed to finding alternative ways to collaborate with the U.S. on international stability.
