$1bn Integrated Poultry Project to Begin in Enugu, Kaduna, Oyo

The pilot phase of a $1 billion National Integrated Poultry Project is set to commence in Enugu, Kaduna and Oyo states, the Director-General and Global Liaison of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Mr. Joseph Tegbe, has announced.

Tegbe disclosed this while speaking at the Chinese New Year Temple Fair, which also marked the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China.

The 2026 Chinese New Year celebrates the Year of the Horse.

According to him, the three states were selected for the pilot phase of the ambitious agro-industrial initiative, with plans already underway to expand the project to other states across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones next year.

When completed, Tegbe said the integrated poultry project would significantly boost Nigeria’s food production capacity, delivering a combined output of six million eggs daily, housing over seven million laying birds and more than two million broilers, while cultivating over 60,000 hectares of maize and soybeans to support feed production.

He explained that beyond meeting the feed requirements of the poultry farms, the initiative would also provide critical support to existing farmers through subsidised feedstock.

“Beyond feedstock for the farms, this initiative will support existing farmers through subsidised feedstock. This project is not merely about food security; it is about jobs, dignity, and opportunity for Nigerians,” Tegbe said.

He added that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to strengthen food security, reduce import dependence and create sustainable employment opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

Speaking further on Nigeria–China industrial collaboration, Tegbe highlighted renewed efforts to revitalise the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, describing it as a major milestone in the partnership between both countries.

“The revitalisation of Ajaokuta Steel Complex marks another inspiring chapter in our partnership. Long a symbol of unrealised potential, Ajaokuta is now poised for renewal through collaboration with China,” he said.

According to him, once fully revitalised, Ajaokuta is expected to produce up to 10 million metric tonnes of steel annually, a development he said would significantly alter Nigeria’s economic trajectory.

“With an expected output of 10 million metric tonnes per annum, a revitalised Ajaokuta will transform Nigeria’s economic trajectory, powering industries, creating jobs, and positioning Nigeria as a leading manufacturing and innovation hub in Africa,” Tegbe noted.

He stressed that the Federal Government remains determined to deliver tangible outcomes that reflect the beginning of a new industrial era for the country, driven by strategic international partnerships and large-scale investment in key productive sectors.

The event underscored growing economic, agricultural and industrial cooperation between Nigeria and China, as both nations continue to deepen ties more than five decades after establishing diplomatic relations.
