Tochukwu Albert Nnebocha, 44, has been sentenced to 97 months in a U.S. federal prison for leading a massive inheritance fraud scheme. Targeting elderly Americans, the scam operated for seven years and resulted in a 97-month sentence.

Upon his release, he will remain under federal supervision for three years.

The operation involved sending thousands of deceptive letters to victims, claiming they were heirs to multimillion-dollar fortunes held in a Spanish bank. To “claim” these none-xistent funds, recipients were coerced into paying fabricated taxes and administrative fees. These high-pressure tactics successfully manipulated hundreds of individuals into losing their life savings.

Investigations showed that Nnebocha defrauded over 400 victims of more than $6 million.

The group used a complex laundering network, often turning former victims into “money mules” to move payments across borders. This layered strategy was designed to hide the trail of stolen funds from international law enforcement.

Nnebocha was apprehended in Poland in April 2025 and extradited to the United States months later. After being brought to Florida, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. His conviction marks a significant success for international agencies working together to dismantle transnational criminal organizations.

Beyond his prison term, the court ordered Nnebocha to pay over $6.8 million in restitution to his victims. This financial judgment aims to return stolen assets to the seniors who were financially devastated by the scheme. The Department of Justice reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting those who exploit protected members of society.

U.S. Attorney, Jason A. Reding Quiñones condemned the predator’s actions and the harm caused to the elderly. Emphasizing the government’s stance, he stated, “Schemes like this steal not only money but dignity from our seniors. Our Office stands with victims, ensures their voices are heard, and will relentlessly pursue those who prey on them.”
