US Troops in Nigeria Not for Combat Roles, Explains Defence Headquarters

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters on Wednesday denied media reports suggesting the deployment of United States troops in the country, stressing that all international security engagements respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) said the country maintains a structured security partnership with the U.S., focused on capacity building, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and strategic dialogue to combat terrorism and transnational threats.

According to Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, recent speculation about U.S. troop presence is unfounded. He said the partnership operates under bilateral agreements and constitutional provisions, ensuring Nigeria’s independence is not compromised.

The clarification came after a two-day high-level Working Group meeting at the Office of the National Security Adviser, which included senior U.S. officials and their Nigerian counterparts.

The discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation, improving coordination, and enhancing accountability in joint security efforts.

“These engagements are guided strictly by national interest, measurable outcomes, and the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty,” the statement added. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity while working with credible partners.”

The proposals discussed during the meeting are currently under review by Nigerian authorities.

The Defence Headquarters reassured citizens that all security partnerships are transparent, policy-driven, and aligned with Nigeria’s laws.
