Two PDP Senators Dump Party for APC
Two senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the party’s majority in the Senate.
The lawmakers, Senator Haruna Manu representing Taraba Central and Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau representing Taraba North, formally announced their defection during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Their letters of resignation from the PDP were read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In their separate letters, the senators said their decision followed extensive consultations with constituents and political stakeholders.
They cited internal challenges within the PDP and the need to align with what they described as political realities that would better position them to attract development projects to their constituencies.
Senator Lau specifically pointed to unresolved internal disputes and leadership issues within the PDP as factors that influenced his decision to leave the opposition party.
With the defections, the APC’s numerical strength in the upper chamber has increased, consolidating its dominance in the Senate and reducing the opposition’s influence.
Reacting to the development, Senate President Akpabio welcomed the senators to the APC but cautioned the ruling party to manage its growing membership carefully to avoid internal conflicts.
He noted that the defections reflected shifting political alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
The PDP has yet to issue an official response to the latest defections, which add to a growing list of lawmakers who have crossed over to the APC in recent months amid ongoing internal crises within opposition parties.
