NAF Reactivates Super Puma Helicopter to Boost Maritime, Counter-Insurgency Operations
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reactivated its Super Puma helicopter, signaling a boost to the country’s maritime security and counter-insurgency operations nationwide. The recommissioning ceremony took place at the 205 Rotary Wing in Ikeja, Lagos.
Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), led the ceremony and described the reactivation as a major step in strengthening the operational readiness of the NAF.
The return of the Super Puma is more than restoring an aircraft to service; it enhances our capability to safeguard the nation’s airspace, maritime borders, and internal security,” CAS Aneke said.
He noted that the helicopter would play a critical role in troop transport, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, and logistics support during joint operations with the Army and Navy.
The Super Puma had been grounded for about three years due to technical issues but was successfully restored through the efforts of the 205 Rotary Wing’s technicians and specialist consultants. CAS Aneke emphasized that strict maintenance and safety standards would guide its continued operation.
The Air Chief highlighted that the helicopter would particularly support maritime security operations around Lagos waters and strengthen the NAF’s efforts in counter-insurgency campaigns against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and banditry across the country.
