Being Broke Is a Mindset, Insists Wahab Okoya
Wahab Okoya, son of Nigerian billionaire industrialist, Rasaq Okoya, has sparked online discussions after appearing on the Cruise TV YouTube show, “I’m a billionaire son, ask me anything,” where he was asked 20 questions by members of the public.
During the interview, Wahab addressed questions about wealth, financial hardship, and poverty. He described the experience of being “broke” as largely a matter of mindset, suggesting that one’s outlook and approach to money can influence their financial situation.
Wahab, who is 19 years old, reflected on his upbringing in a wealthy family, acknowledging that his exposure to privilege has shaped his perspective.
He admitted that he had recently been surprised by rising everyday expenses in Nigeria, such as fuel prices, which he described as “crazy.”
Despite this, he encouraged young people to adopt a proactive and opportunity-focused mindset toward wealth creation.
He also compared Nigeria today with three years ago, saying that he sees visible improvements in the country’s infrastructure and overall environment, particularly for those who have the opportunity to study abroad and return home.
Wahab’s comments have generated mixed reactions online. Critics argue that his statements highlight a disconnect between Nigeria’s elite and ordinary citizens, pointing out that true financial hardship goes beyond mindset, encompassing structural challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and limited access to resources.
Supporters, however, believe his remarks reflect the importance of personal ambition and mindset in achieving success.
