Kogi State has ordered an immediate shutdown of all primary and secondary schools following credible intelligence regarding security threats to educational facilities.
Information Commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo described the closure as a proactive safety measure. The directive aims to protect students and staff from potential security breaches.
Private school owners confirmed the midterm break was moved forward to accommodate the closure.
Schools are expected to remain shut until February 16, 2026.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to fortify school premises during the break. Efforts are underway to clear criminal hideouts and ensure a safe return.
The government thanked security agencies for the timely intelligence that prompted the decision.
Officials reiterated their commitment to the absolute safety of all residents.
Commissioner Fanwo stated that the shutdown “was not borne out of panic, but of responsibility.” He noted that the state chose proactive action over reacting to a crisis.
