INEC Finalises 2027 Election Timetable Despite Delay in Electoral Act Amendment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has finalised the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, despite delays by the National Assembly in passing the amended Electoral Act.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), assuring stakeholders that the commission remains prepared for the next general elections.

According to Amupitan, INEC has already concluded internal planning processes and submitted its recommendations on proposed electoral reforms to the National Assembly.

However, he acknowledged that the delayed passage of the amended Electoral Act could affect certain aspects of the election schedule once the new law is eventually enacted.

“The commission has done its part by making submissions to the National Assembly,” Amupitan said. “While some items in our timetable may be impacted depending on when the amended Electoral Act is passed, we currently have no option but to continue our preparations based on the existing law.”

He explained that INEC is proceeding with its activities in line with the subsisting Electoral Act to avoid disruptions to the electoral calendar, stressing that early planning is critical to the credibility and success of the 2027 polls.

The INEC chairman also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency and continuous engagement with stakeholders, including civil society groups, as preparations for the elections progress.

The delay in amending the Electoral Act has raised concerns among election observers and advocacy groups, who argue that timely legal reforms are necessary to address challenges identified during previous elections and to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.

However, Amupitan assured that regardless of legislative delays, INEC remains focused on delivering credible, free, and fair elections in 2027.

He added that the commission would promptly adjust its timetable where necessary once the National Assembly concludes work on the amended Electoral Act and it is signed into law.
