Atiku Holds Talks With ADP Leaders Amid Obi, Opposition Realignment Talks
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has intensified consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, holding a high-level meeting with the national leadership of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at his Abuja residence.
The meeting, which took place over the weekend, was confirmed on Monday by the ADP National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, who said the engagement was part of the party’s broader consultations with key democratic stakeholders across the country.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Sani disclosed that the ADP delegation, led by the party’s national leadership, met with Atiku in continuation of efforts to strengthen democratic pluralism and opposition collaboration ahead of the next electoral cycle.
“The national leadership of the ADP, led by the National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, held a high-level consultative meeting with Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, as part of its ongoing engagements with key democratic stakeholders,” the statement read.
According to him, discussions centred on the need to protect democratic competition, strengthen opposition stability, and safeguard credible electoral choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
He noted that emphasis was placed on preserving constitutionally compliant political platforms, promoting responsible political preparedness, and ensuring the protection of voter choice and institutional integrity.
The meeting comes amid growing conversations within opposition circles over possible alliances, mergers, and strategic partnerships, especially following the 2023 elections.
Political observers note that Atiku’s engagement with the ADP is part of wider consultations involving opposition leaders, including supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as parties weigh options for a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
While neither Atiku nor the ADP confirmed discussions on party defection or a formal coalition, sources say the talks reflect ongoing efforts to build consensus and strengthen opposition structures ahead of future elections.
Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has in recent months been linked to various opposition realignment talks, fuelling speculation about the shape of the political contest in 2027.
The ADP leadership maintained that its engagement with Atiku was driven by national interest and democratic responsibility, stressing that any future decisions would be guided by the need to deepen democracy and offer Nigerians credible electoral alternatives.
