Terrorists Overwhelm Police, Blast Station with Dynamite in Niger State Attack
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed a violent terrorist attack on the Agwara community in the Agwara Local Government Area, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
During the raid, the attackers reportedly used dynamite to blow up a local police station, causing significant damage to the infrastructure.
According to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu Elleman, the security forces on the ground were unable to repel the invasion due to the sheer scale of the assault. The gunmen arrived in large numbers, effectively suppressing the local defense during the operation.
Addressing the media regarding the incident, the Commissioner of Police explained the difficult situation his officers faced.
He stated, “We were overwhelmed by the number of the terrorists.” This admission highlights the growing challenges faced by security agencies in managing large-scale insurgent movements in the region.
The attack has caused panic within the Agwara community, with many residents fearing for their safety as the terrorists reportedly operated with high-grade explosives.
Beyond the destruction of the police station, the full extent of casualties and property damage is still being assessed by authorities.
In response to the incident, the police command has deployed additional tactical teams and a joint security task force to the area to restore order.
The Commissioner assured the public that efforts are being intensified to track down the perpetrators and prevent further incursions into neighboring villages.
This latest development adds to a series of security breaches in Niger State, where local governments like Agwara and Borgu have frequently been targeted by bandits and terrorist groups.
The state government continues to call for federal support to bolster the capacity of security forces in the North-central zone.
