Nigeria Not Poor but Mismanaged, Says Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s persistent challenges stem largely from the actions of its political leadership, arguing that the country’s problems are rooted in poor governance rather than a lack of resources.

Obi made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at a thanksgiving service held at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of Oyo State.

Addressing the congregation, the former Anambra State governor called on Nigerians to pray for political office holders, saying divine guidance was needed to ensure public resources are deployed for the benefit of citizens.

He said Nigeria is richly endowed but has suffered due to mismanagement by those entrusted with leadership, urging politicians to reflect on their responsibilities and act in the public interest.

A change in attitude among public officials would significantly improve national outcomes and help place the country on a better path, Obi added.

During his address, Obi also spoke on the development of Ibadan and Oyo State, describing the ancient city as a historic centre that has played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s intellectual and political foundations.

He commended Governor Seyi Makinde for infrastructural and developmental strides in the state, noting that Ibadan had experienced notable transformation under the current administration.

Obi expressed optimism about the future of Oyo State as it marks its golden jubilee, offering prayers for continued progress and stability in the decades ahead.

He further thanked Makinde for his leadership style and support, recalling his involvement at the early stages of the administration when he was invited to engage with members of the state executive council.

The thanksgiving service formed part of activities marking 50 years since the creation of Oyo State.
