Chairman Oshionogue Impeached Over Alleged Misconduct

Hon. Alabi Oshionogue, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, has been impeached by seven of the 10 legislative councillors.

This decision was formalized via a signed letter, sparking immediate political tension across the region.

The removal was led by councillors from wards one, four, six, eight, nine, and 10 on January 28, 2026. The move followed a failed peace intervention by the Edo State House of Assembly, prompting the lawmakers to take action at the Igarra headquarters.

The legislative arm cited several serious allegations as the basis for the chairman’s ouster. The official impeachment letter provided the following justification “We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm, hereby impeach you as the acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today, the 28th January, 2026. This decision is as a result of your abuse of office, high-handedness, embezzlement of Council funds, Anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery, and constant disobedience to constituted authorities”

The impeachment occurred after a failed attempt by three loyalist councillors to suspend the seven dissenting members. Once that counter-move collapsed, the majority bloc moved swiftly to the secretariat to finalize the leadership change.

Oshionogue has denied all allegations of financial impropriety and misconduct. He maintained his innocence by pointing to active development projects currently being executed across all ten wards of the local government area.

Following the removal, Vice Chairman Hon. Ayodele Fatimbi was promptly sworn in as the new council boss. This transition was carried out to prevent a leadership vacuum and ensure administrative continuity within the local government.

The political climate in Akoko-Edo remains volatile as the new administration takes charge. Observers are now waiting to see how the state government responds to this significant shift in the local political landscape.
