Kebbi Governor Appoints Provost for College of Midwifery

The Kebbi State Government has appointed a new provost for the state-owned College of Midwifery in a move aimed at strengthening health workforce development and improving maternal and child healthcare services

The appointment, approved by Governor Nasir Idris, is part of broader reforms to reposition health and educational institutions across the state, with a focus on improving leadership, academic quality, and institutional performance. According to government officials, the new provost is expected to drive the expansion of academic programmes, enhance regulatory compliance, and improve the overall quality of midwifery training in line with national standards set by relevant professional and accreditation bodies. The decision comes amid renewed government investment in health education, including funding for infrastructure upgrades, accreditation processes, and academic reforms in health-related tertiary institutions. The Kebbi State Government has recently supported reforms at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, where leadership restructuring and financial interventions were introduced to restore academic stability and accreditation. In addition, the state has approved significant funding to support the take-off and strengthening of the College of Midwifery in Ambursa, Birnin Kebbi, as part of a strategy to increase the production of qualified nurses and midwives. The initiative is designed to address the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals, particularly in maternal and primary healthcare delivery. Health sector stakeholders say the appointment reflects the government’s commitment to reducing maternal mortality, improving rural healthcare coverage, and building a sustainable pipeline of trained medical personnel for public health facilities across Kebbi State. Officials from the Ministry of Higher Education are expected to provide further details on the provost’s qualifications, tenure, and strategic plans for the institution in the coming days.
