Kano Government Assures Emirate Tussle Will End Soon

The Kano State Government has assured that the prolonged dispute over the emirship in the state is set to be resolved soon.

Speaking to reporters in Kano, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the government has put in place “concrete measures” to ease tensions and ensure a lasting resolution. He emphasized that dialogue with all stakeholders and adherence to the rule of law remain central to the government’s approach. The announcement comes amid lingering political and legal complexities surrounding the emirship. In May 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano and dissolving smaller emirates that had been created in 2019. Since then, the dispute has moved through the courts. A Federal High Court initially nullified aspects of the government’s actions, but the Court of Appeal later upheld the state’s reforms, including Sanusi’s reinstatement, while granting a stay of execution pending review by the Supreme Court. Opponents of Sanusi’s reinstatement, including supporters of the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, have taken the matter to the apex court, keeping the final outcome pending. The government has also noted that recent political developments in the state, including Governor Yusuf’s planned defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), could influence public perception of the emirate issue. Internal tensions within the state government, highlighted by the Commissioner for Information urging the Deputy Governor to resign for not following the governor’s lead, add another layer of complexity. Despite these challenges, the Kano State Government reassured residents that the emirate tussle would be resolved amicably, with respect for both traditional institutions and judicial authority. The administration reiterated its commitment to peace, stability, and unity across the state.
