NCoS Debunks Alleged Jailbreak in Edo Prison
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has denied reports of a jailbreak at a custodial facility in Edo State, describing the claims as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary public fear.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Service clarified that no inmate escaped from any custodial centre in Edo State, including the Benin Custodial Centre, contrary to circulating rumours on social media and some online platforms. According to the NCoS, the alleged jailbreak report stemmed from an unverified claim that three inmates — including two convicted internet fraudsters and an individual reportedly linked to the 2020 #EndSARS protests — escaped custody earlier this month. The Service firmly refuted the narrative, stating that thorough internal checks and inmate audits confirmed that all persons in custody remain fully accounted for. The Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has conducted comprehensive verification and can confirm that there has been no jailbreak or security breach in any custodial facility within the state,” the statement read. “Custodial operations remain stable, secure, and under effective control. The Service expressed concern over what it described as reckless dissemination of unverified information, warning that such reports could undermine public trust and create avoidable panic among residents. NCoS further emphasized its commitment to maintaining secure custodial operations nationwide, noting that it has continued to strengthen security measures across facilities to prevent escapes and protect both inmates and the public. While acknowledging the important role of the media in informing the public, the Service urged journalists and content creators to verify sensitive security-related information with official sources before publication. It also hinted at possible legal action against individuals or organizations that spread false or malicious claims capable of damaging its reputation. The NCoS reassured residents of Edo State that there is no security threat linked to any custodial facility in the state and urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate information.
