Governor Uba Sani Flags Off Major Infrastructure Project at Ahmadu Bello University
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, on Tuesday inaugurated the reconstruction and expansion of the internal road network at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, marking the start of a 60-kilometre infrastructure upgrade at the institution’s main campus.
The governor said the project is designed to improve mobility, safety and the general learning atmosphere within the university.
He explained that the upgraded roads would feature drainage systems, street lighting, pedestrian paths and access-friendly routes for persons with disabilities.
“Proper drainage, lighting, pedestrian walkways and disability-accessible routes are integral to this upgrade,”
Sani stated at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Although ABU is owned by the federal government, the governor said his administration chose to intervene because of the central role education plays in national progress.
“Although ABU is a federal university, my administration firmly believes that investing in education is investing in our future. That conviction compels us to support projects that remove barriers to learning and improve the daily lives of students, staff and host communities,” he said.
Sani added that the initiative reflects his government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that supports teaching, research and academic excellence at one of Nigeria’s most historic universities.
He stressed that the project is not just about road construction but about promoting dignity, accessibility and campus safety.
“This project is more than the laying of asphalt and concrete. It is about safety, accessibility and dignity. Well-planned internal roads will improve access for emergency and service vehicles,” he said.
According to the governor, the improved road network will ease movement across campus, strengthen security and provide a more conducive environment for academic activities. He assured that construction would follow high engineering standards, utilise durable materials and incorporate effective stormwater management to guarantee sustainability.
Sani also noted that the development would boost ABU’s capacity to host large academic events such as conferences and convocation ceremonies, thereby attracting visitors, partnerships and investments to Kaduna State.
He added that the project would generate employment opportunities for artisans and labourers, stimulating economic activity in Zaria, Sabon Gari and surrounding communities.
Reflecting on the university’s legacy, Sani described ABU Zaria as the oldest university in Northern Nigeria, named after the region’s first Premier, and credited the institution with producing generations of leaders and professionals who have contributed to national development.
In a welcome address, ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, praised the governor for supporting the university at what he called a critical period. He described the intervention as timely and strategic, while also expressing appreciation for land grants approved to support staff housing.
“This gesture speaks directly to staff welfare, institutional stability and long-term sustainability,” Ahmed said.
“By enabling improved living conditions for our staff, you are strengthening morale, productivity and commitment — key pillars for any university that seeks excellence,” he added.
The vice-chancellor further commended Sani’s leadership approach, describing it as inclusive and forward-looking.
“In just two years, your approach to governance has helped restore confidence, promote stability and renew hope across Kaduna State.
The impact is visible, and institutions such as ours are direct beneficiaries,” Ahmed stated.
