First Lady Tasks Nigerians on Environmental Protection

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged citizens to take greater responsibility for environmental protection, stressing that safeguarding the environment is essential for public health, sustainable development, and the future of the nation.

In a message delivered in Abuja to mark the 2026 International Day of Clean Energy, Mrs. Tinubu called on Nigerians to adopt environmentally friendly habits, promote clean energy solutions, and support initiatives aimed at reducing pollution and conserving natural resources. She emphasized that environmental protection is no longer a choice but a necessity, as climate change, waste pollution, deforestation, flooding, and desertification continue to threaten livelihoods and ecosystems across the country. I urge all Nigerians to embrace renewable energy and sustainable technologies as an essential foundation for survival, healthy living, and environmental stewardship. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable nation,” the First Lady said. Mrs. Tinubu highlighted the importance of transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, noting that cleaner energy systems can help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate-related challenges. Her message aligns with the United Nations’ objectives for the International Day of Clean Energy, which seeks to accelerate global action toward affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy while supporting climate goals and environmental conservation. Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that Nigeria remains highly vulnerable to climate impacts, with northern communities facing desert encroachment, central regions experiencing erosion, and coastal areas battling recurrent flooding. Rapid urbanization and poor waste management have also contributed to environmental degradation in major cities. Through her Renewed Hope Initiative, the First Lady has continued to promote environmental sustainability, youth engagement in climate action, tree planting campaigns, and awareness programs aimed at encouraging responsible environmental behavior among Nigerians. Stakeholders believe that Mrs. Tinubu’s call could help strengthen national efforts to promote environmental responsibility, encourage community participation in climate action, and support government policies focused on green development. As environmental pressures continue to rise, the First Lady’s message underscores the need for collective action by government, private sector players, and ordinary citizens to secure a cleaner and more sustainable future for Nigeria.
