Driver Kills PoS Operator in Abuja

A tragic incident occurred in the Berger area of the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, resulting in the death of a female Point of Sale (POS) operator.

The woman was reportedly struck by a commercial coaster bus near the Total filling station while she was attempting to cross the road. The accident has sparked significant concern among local residents and commuters who witnessed the late-morning tragedy.

According to eyewitness accounts, the coaster bus was being chased at high speed by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

One witness, identified as Johnson, explained that the victim had arrived early for work and had just purchased food before the collision.

He noted that the speed of the pursuit left the woman with little time to react as she stepped onto the road.

The situation was further aggravated by the fact that neither the bus driver nor the pursuing FRSC vehicle stopped after the impact. Witnesses reported that the chase continued unabated, leaving the critically injured woman lying on the pavement. The lack of immediate assistance from those involved in the pursuit has drawn sharp criticism from the local community.

The victim remained on the road for several minutes before officers from the Utako Police Division arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, by the time the police reached her, she had already succumbed to her injuries.

A bystander who had recorded the entire sequence of events on a mobile device reportedly handed the footage over to the police to assist in their investigation.

Local business owners, including a newspaper vendor and mechanics working nearby, confirmed the details of the high-speed chase.

They stated that the coaster bus involved typically plies the Mararaba–Nyanya route. The mechanics emphasized that the intensity of the pursuit by the FRSC officials was the direct cause of the driver’s reckless navigation through the busy area.

Another POS operator in the vicinity, named Ola, expressed frustration over the frequency of such chases in the area. He claimed that the FRSC often engages in high-speed pursuits near the filling station, mentioning a similar incident that occurred just the previous Saturday.

He warned that if such dangerous tactics continue, the local workers might take action to prevent officials from conducting chases there.

In response to the allegations, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix Theman, stated that the Corps has launched an internal investigation into the matter.

He announced that all patrol teams operating within the Central Area and Zone 7 have been recalled for questioning.

Theman noted that they are working to verify whether an official patrol unit was actually involved in the pursuit at that time.

While the investigation continues, the FRSC Commander urged the public to wait for the official facts before drawing conclusions.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer for further comments were unsuccessful at the time of the report.

The community remains in mourning as they call for stricter regulations regarding high-speed vehicle interceptions in crowded urban zones.
