Amosun: Presidency Must Remain in South Until 2031, Insists Amosun
Former Ogun State Governor and Senator, Ibikunle Amosun, has called on Nigerians to allow the presidency to remain in the South until 2031, insisting that this arrangement is crucial to sustaining national unity and political equity. He made the statement on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Ake Pavilion, Abeokuta, during activities marking his 68th birthday celebration.
Addressing a gathering of political supporters, party loyalists, and well-wishers, Amosun argued that after eight years of leadership from the North under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is only fair for the South to complete its own eight-year tenure in office under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The North has had its full eight years under President Muhammadu Buhari. It is only fair that the South completes its own eight-year tenure. This is about equity, stability, and national cohesion,” Amosun said, adding that respecting the principle of rotation is a “no-brainer” for anyone committed to Nigeria’s unity. Amosun, a longstanding chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu and his potential re-election in 2027, noting that the South deserves its turn in leadership to maintain political balance and national cohesion. He further described Tinubu’s administration as a continuation of progressive governance, acknowledging that while some economic reforms may have been challenging, they are beginning to yield positive results. Amosun urged Nigerians to be patient and to support policies aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable growth and development. The birthday event at Ake Pavilion doubled as a political gathering, attracting several prominent APC leaders, including former Minister of Mines and Steel Development Lekan Adegbite, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK Sarafa Tunji Isola, ex-CBN Deputy Governor Tunde Lemo, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, and Senator Gbenga Obadara. Amosun stressed the importance of party unity, urging members not to undermine APC structures and leadership. He maintained that a united party is essential for political stability and the smooth functioning of democracy in Nigeria.
