Ex‑Sokoto Senator Dumps ADC, Declares for PDP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Senator representing Sokoto East, Abubakar Umar Gada, has officially dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and declared his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a desire to rebuild the party in Sokoto ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gada made the announcement during a well-attended political gathering in Sokoto State on Saturday, emphasising the need for a “revitalised and cohesive PDP” in the region. He stated that his decision stemmed from concerns over the ADC’s direction in the state, describing it as lacking structure and clear leadership. I am returning to the PDP to help reclaim and rebuild the party in Sokoto. The ADC has not provided the kind of political engagement our people deserve, and it is time to refocus our efforts,” Gada said. The former senator also indirectly criticised Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a key ADC figure in Sokoto, for what he described as limited efforts to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. Reactions to Gada’s move have been mixed. While supporters at the event hailed the defection as a boost for PDP’s revival in Sokoto, party officials have said that Gada has not yet been formally registered into the party at the state level. Political analysts say the development reflects a broader trend of shifting loyalties among Nigerian politicians as the 2027 elections approach. The opposition landscape is increasingly fragmented, with high-profile figures moving between ADC, PDP, and other parties, reshaping alliances and strategies. Observers note that Gada’s return to the PDP could strengthen the party’s position in Sokoto, particularly as political realignments gain momentum across the northern states. The former senator is expected to complete his formal registration with the PDP soon, setting the stage for active participation in party activities and preparations for the 2027 polls.
