Police Arrest 5 with Fake Dollars, Mercury in Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has paraded five suspects involved in a criminal conspiracy involving the possession of counterfeit United States currency and substances suspected to be mercury.

The arrests were made following intelligence-led operations by officers from the Dukku Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, four of the suspects were intercepted in Dukku town at approximately 11:00 am.

During the operation, the police recovered 304 pieces of counterfeit $100 notes from the group, which consisted of individuals from Gombe, Kaduna, and Kano states.

The suspects identified in the currency syndicate include 29-year-old Kabiru Abubakar and 30-year-old Abubakar Aliyu, both from Dukku; 22-year-old Abdulrahman Mustapha from Kaduna; and 45-year-old Isah Alhasan from Kano. Upon being questioned, the group reportedly confessed to the crime.

As part of the investigation, DSP Abdullahi noted that the suspects provided information leading to the source of the illicit funds.

Specifically, the PPRO stated, “During the course of investigation, the suspects confessed to the offence and further indicted the fourth suspect as the supplier of the counterfeit currency.”

In a related development on the same day, police operatives arrested two additional suspects, Muhammad Muhammad and Abubakar Bala, both from Nasarawa State.

They were found in possession of a substance believed to be mercury, which they admitted was intended for use in the manufacturing of fake currency notes.

The Gombe State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling financial crimes and maintaining security within the state. While the suspects remain in custody, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to help dismantle such criminal networks.
