Oyo Gov Pledges Reforms in Environment, Waste Management

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged significant reforms to address the state’s environmental and waste management challenges. Speaking on Friday, he highlighted the need to tackle culturally entrenched behaviors that negatively impact the environment.

He emphasized that these changes are essential for the long-term health and well-being of all residents.

The commitment was made during the swearing-in of Ademola Aderinto as the new Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources in Ibadan. Makinde acknowledged that while some progress has occurred, substantial work remains to achieve a sustainable vision.

He noted that the administration must intensify its efforts to ensure a cleaner state.

In a statement by his media aide, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the governor assured citizens of positive transformations before his tenure ends.

He clarified that Aderinto’s appointment was based on merit and professional value rather than political patronage.

This strategy aims to ensure that leadership roles are filled by those truly capable of delivering results.

Highlighting the difficulty of the task, the governor stated: “Aderinto, you have taken the oath of office and you are going to the Ministry of Environment. It is a challenging ministry, one of the areas where we have more to do.

There are things that are entrenched culturally, and we have to crack them; we have to make things better.” With roughly 16 months left in office, Makinde described the current mission as a “race against time.”

He urged the new commissioner to work diligently to leave a lasting legacy for the people of Oyo. He noted that even a short period of focused leadership can leave a permanent, golden mark on the state’s history.

Following the ceremony, Commissioner Aderinto expressed his readiness to tackle climate action and environmental protection immediately.

He called on residents to cooperate by adopting better waste disposal habits and maintaining cleaner surroundings.

The event was attended by various top government officials, including the Deputy Governor and judicial representatives.
