Oyo Unveils Week-long Activities for 50th Anniversary

Oyo State has officially unveiled a week-long schedule of activities to commemorate its 50th anniversary, marking five decades since its creation on February 3, 1976.

The Chairman of the Anniversary Committee, Hon. Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, announced the lineup during a press briefing in Ibadan, describing the Golden Jubilee as a landmark moment to celebrate the state’s heritage and “Pacesetter” status.

The festivities are set to begin on January 26 with a keynote lecture delivered by Governor Seyi Makinde at the University of Ibadan. The theme of the celebration, “Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present, and Reimagining the Future,” aims to reflect on the state’s historical journey while setting a clear vision for its economic and social development over the next 50 years.

The week will feature a diverse range of events designed to reach residents in every corner of the state, including health outreach programs across all 33 Local Government Areas. Other planned activities include cultural exhibitions, film shows in all six geopolitical zones, sports competitions, and empowerment programs specifically targeted at women and the youth.

A major highlight of the celebration will be the formal unveiling of key infrastructure projects, such as the first phase of the Ibadan Circular Road. The committee emphasized that the festivities are not just about entertainment but are intended to showcase the tangible progress the state has made in agriculture, education, and urban development under the current administration.

The Golden Jubilee will culminate on February 3, 2026, with a grand finale and dinner night in the state capital. During this event, the government will honor distinguished citizens and pioneers who have contributed significantly to the state’s growth since 1976, bringing the historic week to a close with a vision of unity and continued prosperity.
