CAF Fines Algeria $100,000, Suspends Players after Nigeria Clash

CAF has fined the Algerian Football Federation $100,000 following chaotic scenes during their 2025 AFCON quarter-final loss to Nigeria.

The Disciplinary Board cited widespread misconduct by players and officials, alongside several security breaches caused by supporters.

Individual sanctions were also issued, with defender Rafik Belghali receiving a four-match ban for aggressive behavior toward the referee. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane was handed a two-match suspension for his role in the post-match unrest.

The financial penalty includes $5,000 for excessive yellow cards and $25,000 for the team’s overall lack of discipline. These fines address actions that CAF determined brought the game into disrepute.

Fans contributed to the costs through fines for using smoke devices and throwing objects. An additional $10,000 was charged after supporters attempted to invade the pitch following the 2-0 defeat.

This ruling reinforces CAF’s zero-tolerance policy regarding violence and unprofessionalism in continental football.

The governing body aims to ensure higher safety and integrity standards for future international matches.
