BUA Drivers Protest Amidst $500,000 Super Eagles Gift

Truck drivers for BUA Cement on Wednesday staged a protest in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The drivers gathered to express their frustration over an alleged snub of a 10 billion Naira welfare package intended for the company’s staff and drivers.
The protesters have accused the management of BUA Cement of neglecting their internal welfare and working conditions despite the company’s high profitability.
This massive “welfare snub” has reportedly left many employees feeling undervalued and financially strained, leading to the public demonstration in the city center.
Public scrutiny of the company has intensified because the protest occurred just days after BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, pledged $500,000 to the Super Eagles. Although Nigeria lost their AFCON semi-final match against Morocco, Rabiu confirmed on January 15, 2026, that he would still fulfill the half-million-dollar reward for the team.
The drivers pointed to this large donation as evidence that the company has the resources to meet their demands.
They argued that while supporting the national team is commendable, the company should first prioritize the essential workers who keep their operations running.
The demonstration has
caught some attention in Abuja as the drivers seek a formal commitment from management regarding the 10 billion Naira welfare package.
As of Wednesday evening, BUA Cement has yet to issue an official response to the specific grievances raised by the protesting truck drivers.
