President Rumen of Bulgaria Offers to Step Down Ahead of Snap Election
Bulgarian President, Rumen Radev has announced his resignation, a move that comes amid a period of intense political instability and widespread anti-corruption protests.
His departure follows the collapse of several attempts by major political parties to form a stable government after the previous administration resigned in December 2025.
The president’s decision has triggered a call for snap elections, which will be the eighth time Bulgarians head to the polls in just four years.
Radev expressed that the current political class has failed to meet public expectations, stating that the country requires a “radical and real change” to restore the rule of law and public trust.
Political analysts suggest that Radev’s resignation is a strategic maneuver, as he is widely expected to form and lead his own political party.
By stepping down now, he positions himself to participate directly in the upcoming vote rather than remaining in a neutral, ceremonial role.
As the poorest member of the European Union, Bulgaria faces urgent pressure to establish a stable government to secure vital EU funding and manage its recent adoption of the euro.
A caretaker cabinet will now be appointed to manage state affairs until the snap elections are held.
