Abia Employs 649 Health Workers

The Abia State Government has hired 649 new health professionals, including nurses and a neurosurgeon, to bolster the state’s medical workforce.
This recruitment drive aims to eliminate long-standing manpower shortages and ensure that residents can access specialized care within their own communities.
To combat the “japa” syndrome and retain talent, the administration is implementing the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for local government workers.
By aligning state pay with federal standards, the government hopes to discourage the drain of medical experts seeking better opportunities elsewhere.
In addition to hiring, the state is rapidly upgrading its infrastructure by renovating and equipping over 100 Primary Health Centres.
The administration plans to have 250 facilities fully operational by the end of the year, ensuring modern equipment and trained staff are available in rural areas.
Commissioner Okey Kanu noted that recruitment remains open for specialists like dental officers and consultants to further strengthen the system.
This comprehensive approach reflects Governor Alex Otti’s priority of transforming Abia’s healthcare sector through both personnel investment and facility modernization.
