US Embassy, Lagos Consulate to close Monday for Martin Luther king Jr. Day
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026.
This closure is in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States that honors the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader.
The announcement was made via the Mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, informing the public of the one-day pause in regular activities.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday and his advocacy for racial equality through nonviolent protest.
While routine consular and administrative services will be suspended during the holiday, the Mission confirmed that emergency services for U.S. citizens will remain available.
The holiday was officially established as a federal law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan and was first observed across the United States in January 1986.
Normal diplomatic operations and services at both the Abuja and Lagos facilities are expected to resume fully on Tuesday, J
anuary 20, 2026.
