Petrol Tanker Catches Fire at Ilorin Filling station

On Saturday afternoon, the Kwara State Fire Service successfully averted a major disaster at the Olumo filling station in Ilorin.
A petrol tanker, which had just arrived from Lagos, caught fire while preparing to discharge its cargo.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:31 PM at the Oko-Olowo Junction. The tanker was heavily loaded with 45,000 litres of petrol, creating a high risk of a catastrophic explosion that could have leveled the station and surrounding buildings.
Firefighters arrived on the scene as the blaze was rapidly escalating. Through high professionalism and tireless effort, they managed to contain the inferno, saving the filling station’s infrastructure and preventing any loss of life.
While the tanker itself sustained damage, the fire was stopped before it could trigger a larger blast. State Fire Service spokesman Hassan Adekunle confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Director, Alabi Muhammed praised the bravery of the firefighting team and urged fuel transporters to strictly follow safety protocols.
He emphasized that routine vehicle inspections and functional on-site fire equipment are essential to preventing future disasters.
