Lagos Arrests 281 Street Urchins
Lagos State Government has arrested 281 street urchins, popularly known as “Omotaku,” during a week-long enforcement operation.
The exercise, carried out by the Lagos State Taskforce, targeted various strategic locations across both the Island and Mainland to restore order and public safety in the metropolis.
The suspects were apprehended for allegedly harassing motorists and pedestrians, often extorting money from drivers whose vehicles developed mechanical faults on the road.
The Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, emphasized that the activities of these miscreants had become a significant threat to residents, making the proactive intervention necessary to maintain environmental sanity.
The operations spanned several high-traffic areas, including Lekki Phase 1, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ajah, and the Lagos Island axis. Other mainland areas such as Fadeyi, Egbeda, Surulere, and Ojuelegba were also cleared of hoodlums who had been using public spaces as hideouts and spots for their illegal activities.
Following the raids, the authorities confirmed that all 281 suspects have been arraigned in court to face charges related to their conduct. The government reaffirmed its commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements, warning that “crime is not a career” and that sustained enforcement would continue until Lagos roads are entirely free of such threats.
To ensure long-term success, the state government has urged residents and motorists to remain vigilant and report any sightings of street urchins to the appropriate agencies.
