Vaccinate Children Against Measles, Imo State Urges Parents

The Imo State Government is urging parents to vaccinate children aged nine months to 14 years against measles and rubella.

This initiative, announced on January 16, 2026, aims to protect the state’s youth from severe, life-threatening health complications.

Health officials warned that rubella can cause “holes in the heart,” blindness, and cataracts in children.

This specific age group represents 42 percent of the population and is considered the most at-risk demographic for spreading these dangerous infections.

The statewide vaccination campaign is scheduled to run from February 4 to 15, 2026.

To maximize reach, doses will be available at various convenient locations, including schools, churches, mosques, and community centers throughout the region.

Authorities aim to immunize at least 2.6 million people, stressing that the vaccine is safe and proven. Pediatric experts are encouraging families to ignore misinformation or cultural myths and prioritize their children’s long-term medical well-being.

The drive seeks to eliminate preventable disabilities like deafness and cardiac defects caused by these contagious viruses. Journalists and community leaders are asked to spread awareness so that every eligible child is reached during the ten-day window.
