Fire Razes Filling Station, Tanker in Saki Area of Oyo
A fire outbreak on Tuesday destroyed a multipurpose filling station, a fuel tanker and a motorcycle in the Ofiki area of Saki, Oyo State.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday in Ibadan.
He said the agency received an emergency call from Alhaji Mufutau Badmus, the Saki branch chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, alerting them to the fire.
Firefighters led by Mr Kolade Taiwo were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, they found the filling station already engulfed in flames, alongside a DAF tanker carrying about 50,000 litres of petrol, a Bajaj motorcycle and three fuel pumps.
Akinwande said the fire service personnel succeeded in putting out the blaze and stopped it from spreading to nearby buildings and properties. He praised officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Ofiki for providing security support during the operation.
He advised filling station owners across the state to strictly follow fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
In a related development, another fire was recorded on January 9 at a filling station in Kara area of Kishi, in Irepo Local Government Area of the state. The incident destroyed three vehicles and a community power house.
An eyewitness said the fire started around 5 p.m. after an explosion at the power house, which set nearby materials ablaze and spread to other properties.
