FG Does Not Pay Ransom for Hostage Release, Insists Defence Minister
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has said the Federal Government does not pay ransom to secure the release of kidnapped victims, explaining that hostages are rescued through sustained military operations and intelligence-led pressure on criminal groups during rescue missions across Nigeria.
Musa made the statement in an interview where he rejected claims that the government negotiates or pays kidnappers, especially in cases involving abducted schoolchildren.
He said security forces move into forests and hideouts to mount pressure on armed groups, forcing them to abandon captives who are then recovered by troops.
He warned that paying ransom only empowers criminal networks and increases kidnapping activities. He called on families and communities to report abductions immediately to security agencies instead of entering negotiations with kidnappers.
The minister also advised the public to stop any form of collaboration with armed groups, including selling them food or supplies.
He said accepting money from such groups amounts to benefiting from criminal activity.
Musa stressed that information from citizens remains vital to successful rescue operations. He added that the Federal Government remains committed to restoring peace through continuous security operations and cautioned state governments against making peace deals with armed groups.
