Abducted Edo Doctor Freed After Family Pays N50m Ransom

A medical doctor abducted in Edo State, Dr Ibrahim Tahir, has been released after his family paid a ransom of N50 million to his captors.

The doctor was kidnapped on January 2 alongside his younger brother at their home on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while they were opening the gate to their compound.

Tragically, the younger brother was later found dead on January 5 near Orley River, also in the Igbira Camp area. He was reportedly killed by the kidnappers.

The victim’s father disclosed that the ransom was paid in two instalments of N20 million and N30 million. He said the family relied on contributions from relatives, friends, non-governmental organisations and other well-wishers to raise the amount.

He added that his released son sustained a gunshot injury to the leg and is currently receiving medical care.

He also said vigilantes and local hunters who set an ambush before the doctor’s release informed the family that one of the kidnappers was shot during the operation.

The father expressed mixed emotions over the outcome, saying he was grateful his son returned alive but heartbroken over the loss of his other child.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the release. The police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the command could verify that the doctor had regained his freedom.
