Two More Rivers Lawmakers Urge Assembly to Halt Fubara’s Impeachment
Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to discontinue the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made the call on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after two other legislators publicly urged the Assembly to shelve the move to impeach the governor.
The impeachment notice, issued on January 8, accused Governor Fubara of gross misconduct, including the alleged demolition of the Assembly complex, engagement in extra-budgetary spending, and defiance of a Supreme Court ruling affirming legislative autonomy.
Speaking separately, Nwakoh and Amadi acknowledged that the allegations raised against the governor and his deputy bordered on breaches of constitutional provisions.
However, they said the decision to appeal for a withdrawal of the impeachment process was informed by interventions from “well-meaning leaders” and stakeholders within the state.
As reported by TVC News, the lawmakers stressed the need to prioritise peace, stability, and effective governance in Rivers State, warning that prolonged political tensions could undermine development and public confidence in democratic institutions.
Their latest intervention adds to growing internal dissent within the Assembly over the impeachment bid, suggesting that consensus among lawmakers may be weakening.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, following months of friction between the executive arm and the legislature.
As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly had not formally responded to the appeals, while the impeachment process remains technically ongoing.
