FG Commences Implementation of Agreement with ASUU Ahead of Signing Ceremony

The Nigerian government has commenced the implementation of several key components of its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) even before the formal signing ceremony.

A letter from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) confirmed that the government has approved reviewed remunerations and directed relevant agencies to begin payments effective from January 1, 2026.

This development follows a landmark agreement reached on December 23, 2025, which aims to resolve a 16-year impasse over university funding and staff welfare. Under the new terms, academic staff are now entitled to increased allowances, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), secretarial allowances for professors, and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) for duties like postgraduate supervision.

The agreement also includes a significant 40 percent salary increase for academics and stipulates that professors will receive a pension equivalent to their final annual salary upon retirement at age 70.

Furthermore, the government has committed to establishing a National Research Council with statutory funding tied to one percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

A formal signing ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Education, is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, in Abuja to solidify the pact. ASUU President Chris Piwuna expressed optimism regarding the deal, noting that the union expects the current administration to show more “fidelity to their words” than previous governments that failed to honor past agreements.
